Katharine Merry is an English former athlete and Olympian who is now a successful speaker, TV commentator and event host.
She achieved the bronze medal in the 400 metres at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was the fastest woman in the world over 400 m in 2001.
After retiring from competitive athletics in 2005, Katharine transitioned into broadcasting and media. She has been a prominent figure in sports commentary, serving as a lead athletics commentator for the BBC. She was the first female stadium commentator at both an Olympic Games and World Championships in athletics and regularly became the ‘first female’ lead commentator to break glass ceilings on radio and television.
Beyond her commentary roles, Katharine has appeared on various television programs, showcasing her versatility. She was featured in the TV mini-series “Snobs” in 2003. She has participated in popular shows like “Celebrity Antiques Road Trip,” where she teamed up with fellow Olympian and Great British Speaker Linford Christie in a friendly competition to discover valuable antiques.
Born in Dunchurch, Rugby, England, Katharine Merry emerged as a prodigious talent in athletics from a young age.
She took up competitive running at 10 and topped the UK Under 13 rankings in seven different events at the age of 12. At 14, she was the fastest girl in the world and started her international GB career at just 13.
Specialising in sprints, Katharine initially focused on the 100m and 200m events. She clinched the gold medal in the 200m at the 1993 European Junior Championships, marking her as a rising star in British athletics. Transitioning to the 400m, she achieved her career-best performance in 2001 with a time of 49.59 seconds, making her the fastest woman globally over that distance that year.
At 18, Katharine was part of the GB team for the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. While only a reserve and ultimately not needed to compete, the experience profoundly impacted Katharine, inspiring her to work towards competing in the next Olympics.
Four years later, at the Sydney Olympics, Katharine made her mark in a career-defining performance in the women’s 400m final. Racing against some of the greatest sprinters of her time, Katharine secured a bronze medal with a personal best time of 49.72 seconds, making her the fastest British female over 400m that year.
While injury setbacks hampered her ambitions for future Olympic appearances, her Sydney podium finish cemented her legacy as one of Britain’s greatest sprinters.
After retiring from competitive athletics, Katharine transitioned to broadcasting, continuing her Olympic involvement in a new role. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (held in 2021), she made history as the first-ever female stadium commentator for Olympic athletics, further showcasing her ability to break barriers and lead in sports media.
Recognised as one of the world’s leading in-vision stadium hosts, Katharine Merry made history in 2019 as the first-ever female stadium commentator at a World Athletics Championships – an achievement she repeated at the postponed Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
In 2022, she brought her expertise to the first-ever World Outdoor Athletics Championships held in the USA, in Oregon. By 2023, Katharine led the first all-female stadium commentary team at the European Indoor Championships in Turkey and provided stadium commentary for the World Athletics Diamond League Final in Eugene.
